The reason to eat 5-6 meals a day (breakfast-snack-lunch-snack-dinner-snack) is so that you have constant amount of food in your belly. The idea is to keep your blood sugar leveled through out the day so that you don't over eat when it's time to eat a larger meal.

Some experts have also said that after about 3 hours of going without eating your body goes into "starvation mood" which means that next time you eat your body will try to store your food because it believes you might not be able to eat again soon.

This was actually documented where people who ate through out the day was compared to people who only ate once per day. While both groups had the same amount of energy expenditure and both ate the same amount of calories. The group that only ate once gained weight while the other group did not.

Also, as a benefit, by having your body always digesting you will increase your metabolism slightly over time.

Hope this better answered your question.

It's really true that you should eat 5 to 6 times daily but you should also know that you must eat lower amount of food to help your metabolism works faster and burn more fats on your body. If you eat the same amount of food for 5 to 6 times daily, your diet will be useless and will only make you weigh heavier.

Also, you must watch the amount of the portions you eat. Eat less of fatty foods and more of healthier ones such as fruits and vegetables. Lean white meat is also advisable and salmon is a good way to eat healthier. :)

Hope this helps.

It is true that you should but always have a hard time with this. Most times I will have one larger meal of the day and will only have 3 meals a day. Hard to find good healthy snacks here to fill in between. How do you all fit little snacks in on the go?

When you eat five to six times per day you will eat less each time.
Every-time you eat in small portions the body uses that food for energy and so that food does not go towards weight gain.

When you eat two or three times per day you will eat more at each meal because you feel very hungry. A heavy meal means that the body will use some for energy and some will go towards weight gain. This is not what you want.

the idea is that you keep your metabolism fired up. Imagine a big log on a fire - that will take ages to burn down totally to ask...now imagine lots of small sticks...they will burn faster - same with eating little and often.

However, I would say that actually, you should, instead of concentrating on someone else telling you when to eat, simply listen to your body and eat when you are hungry and don't eat when you are not, even if it is officially lunchtime or whatever, don't mindlessly eat because you are supposed to.
