The reason to eat 5-6 meals a day (breakfast-snack-lunch-snack-dinner-snack) is so that you have constant amount of food in your belly. The idea is to keep your blood sugar leveled through out the day so that you don't over eat when it's time to eat a larger meal.
Some experts have also said that after about 3 hours of going without eating your body goes into "starvation mood" which means that next time you eat your body will try to store your food because it believes you might not be able to eat again soon.
This was actually documented where people who ate through out the day was compared to people who only ate once per day. While both groups had the same amount of energy expenditure and both ate the same amount of calories. The group that only ate once gained weight while the other group did not.
Also, as a benefit, by having your body always digesting you will increase your metabolism slightly over time.
Hope this better answered your question.
